switch from crib to twin bed

Anonymous
We put my 28 month old son in his new twin bed last night for the first time. It did not go as smoothly as expected. I was shocked b/c he sleeps so well and it did not seem like a huge transition since it is a twin size bed with side rails. He got out a number of times when first putting him to bed, but then did fall asleep until 1 am.....and he was then in our room. For almost 2 hours of back and forth of putting him back in his bed, he fell asleep until morning where I had to wake him up -- but it was a LONG few hours of back and forth during the night.

So I am wondering...is that typical ? and should we keep trying it? Part of me wants to go back to his crib with the crib tent where he did sleep fine but of course could not get out. The new baby will arrive in April and we were looking to get him used to it. Just expected for it to be easy since he has been such a good sleeper. Any thoughts??? Help!

Our ped recommended doing naps in the new bed first, then ease into night time. That didn't work for us, but maybe it might for you. When we transitioned my DD at almost exactly the same age, we put a lot of pillows around, stuffed animals, etc. so it would "feel" more enclosed like a crib. We also had the bed frame forever before we actually got the mattress - so all the talking up we did about moving to a big girl bed helped the transition. Good luck!!
