We're contemplating picking Dr. Burke as our pediatrician as we've read wonderful things about her. However, I'm confused by the Georgetown situation. Do you get to see her each time, or is there some type of clinic?!? Seems previous posts have mentioned sitting in the clinic for a long time, but other posts say that they see Dr. Burke exclusively. Sorry if this is confusing, but any light shed on the situation would help! Thanks!!
PS - Do you park in the GUH parking garage, or is it a separate facility? I couldn't find much info. on this on the website - I'll keep searching!!! |
You can make all your appointments with her, so you can ensure you see her exclusively. But, she's part of the big OB practice so you have to wait in the waiting room with everyone else and deal with the admin side of the large office. Plus you have no guarantee that she will be the OB on call for your delivery. It will be whichever of the 10-12 OBs who work in the practice. The office is located in the Pasquerilla building (the physician's office building that is adjacent to the hospital) so you park in the garage. They do validate parking. |
11:03 here -- sorry, I read too quickly and thought you were asking about an OB not a pediatrician. please disregard my response. |
We LOVE Dr. Burke. She has been our girls' pediatrician since birth. She is not part of the peds practice at Georgetown but part of the Med/Ped's division- so she is a family doctor and also sees my husband and me. She is on the 6th floor and the normal peds group is on the 2nd floor. Anyway, she is in the Pasq. building which is connected to the hospital. You can always make appointments to see her but sometimes you will see a resident for sick visits and then she comes in at the end.
Being at Georgetown there are some major disadvantages- parking is a nightmare, her waiting room is a nightmare and we often wait 45 minutes (she takes her time with patients which is great but also causes lots of delays), it is hard to make appointments (long waits on hold), etc. etc. But she is WONDERFUL. I trust her completely and she has seen our girls through a lot. |
OP here - thank you! That's what I figured about logistics, but if she's good, then we don't care. I'm going to call to see if I can get this ball rolling - I'm not due until March, but when I started calling various practices and found many didn't take my insurance, I got scared. |
Her front office staff is great in person but it can be really hard to make appointments/ reach. When you call to set up your first appointment I would ask for Dr. Burke's secratary's direct number and then call her. You can leave a message for Dr. Burke that way and she will actually get it. Or, hit the button for the triage nurse and then leave a message there. I think the triage nurses' name is Maureen and she can also get in touch with Dr. Burke directly for you. I think the hardest part about Dr. Burke is getting through all of the logistics to actually get to her. When you are finally in the office with her she is wonderful but sometimes it is such a pain getting to that point. Hope that helps! |
One last thing- she will come to visit your baby if you deliver at Georgetown. I actually think she came twice. She will even go to the NICU if your child ends up there. |
Thanks for all the info...and tips! I'm feeling much better about this!! |
You could also call her practice and ask if you can come in and talk about the practice before you have your baby. I did that and see saw me one day around lunch time. We take our two daughters to the Med/Peds practice and see her or the other attending, Dr. Donnelly for scheduled visits and sometimes a resident for sick visits. Really like both. |
