WIS

Our child has been admitted at WIS for Pre-k (Spanish immersion program). We don't speak English at home (neither Spanish). If you are a WIS parent in the same situation, I would love to hear your experience. How was the English proficiency of you child when he/she started 1st grade? Does she/he learn English at all during the Pre-k and K years? thanks

I'm not at WIS, but a similar school with full Spanish immersion for 3K and 4K. There are two kids in my daughter's class whose parents speak a third language at home. One didn't speak English before starting school (just moved here). After about 18 months here both kids are proficient in Spanish and English. One mom told me that maintaining the third language is her biggest challenge.

PP here. Btw, I'm not local, and our school administration has mentioned that WIS is one of the closest programs in the country to our school, which is why I read the threads about it sometimes, so I think the experiences are pretty comparable.

WIS parent here. started in Pre-k.. dont speak a lick of either Spanish or French. There is no English until 1st grade, but they all "catch up".. its an incredible program. you are giving your child such a gift. its not just about language: its about the whole program there. wish you the best of luck!

My DD has been at WIS for 9 years. We've seen every language combination family you can imagine. Your child will learn English perfectly. Child will learn English during PreK and K from all the other children. They will learn outside school. You never have to worry about English in an English speaking environment - you're challenge will be maintaining your home language.

And the English teachers at WIS are outstanding. They instill a great love of reading and teach children how to write amazingly well. Go for it - it's a great school. My child is in middle school now and couldn't be happier.
