switching states of residence

Anonymous
so we moved from VA to MD last year (oct). I switched my state of residence immediately, but my husband forgot. So, we've paid VA too much in taxes and MD too little. Will this be complicated to resolve, or should we just pay someone to do our taxes this year?

Pay someone to do your taxes.

I assume you mean you switched your state of residency with your employer and he did not but you both actually moved at the same time right? If so, I believe there's a block on there for part-year residents and you only accrue a tax liability for the time you lived there. So you might have to pay a small penalty to MD and you'll get a larger refund from VA. Shouldn't be that difficult.

It will not be complicated. You jointly paid something to MD so you will just owe more, and will get a refund from VA if you overpaid.
