designing nursery?

Anonymous
I am expecting my first baby (a boy!) this spring. I am trying to buy furniture and finding it extremely difficult to pick a direction. Does anyone have advice or tips for deciding what color furniture to get? The room is light blue, but I have no idea how to decide between white furniture and dark wood furniture. I like both. With white, I could use the dresser and the shelf later in a guest room. With dark wood, I could use the dresser later in his room and the glider chair in the family room. So in a way, both colors of furniture would "grow" with us and have a longer use than just in the nursery. As a result, I can't make a decision! Any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks!

I would get dark wood since white gets easily dirty.

OP - Congratualtions!

White is easier (IMO) to touch up ....... some things to consider from my experience:
1) I love the glider chair! So I was very happy DH over-ruled my opinion to not have a cute baby print on it so that it made a transition to our family room and even bed room after / in-between infant stages.
2) What are you planning for DS as a crib - meaning are you getting one that transitions to a toddler bed? If so then the dark furniture can make sense.
3) Is there a possibility that the same furniture will be used for another baby (i.e. a girl?) and so might you want the light color crib?

There are usually gliders for sale on craigslist--get one there as they are only useful for a short while and aren't that attractive. babies grow up fast, so don't spend too much, whatever you do! i learned that lesson after getting way too much high-end stuff on number 1. luckily number 2 is due soon and i can reuse some of it, but everything new will be cheapo!

I agree with another poster - decide whether the crib will be convertible or not. If it is -- most likely it will grow with the child and not be used for another child -- so I would go with the darker wood as a little boy probably wont want white furniture. If you want a drop side, then go with either.

On a personal note -- I had white furniture all throughout my childhood and could not wait to get real wood color furniture when I went off to college. My mom was a little disappointed that I did not take the white furniture with me.
