First, I hate that I’m thinking about this (shakes fist at universe for the internets)!

So Occum’s razor in order of likelihood:

1) K did have major surgery and is pumped full of steroids making her swell viscously and as a public figure nearly exclusively lauded for her beauty, she feels psychologically unable to be seen like that. Against: proof of life could include an audio message expressing her regret at doctoring the image. Done. Media storm over. She’s alive. Leave the sick mom alone.

But then…. Just radio silence? Why? A single audio clip would shatter the online fever. Something bigger might explain all the oddities, which without hashing out pure speculation regarding affairs etc are truly damming and flat out weird - no conspiracy theory needed. Such as why there was not a single image of family visiting Kate in hospital except for one planned photo opp w/ William? Really… her “incredibly” close immediate family never seen even once visiting? Kate’s mom and dad MIA for over a month from public view but her sister out and about and brother on a ski trip while Kate convalesces in hospital for two weeks?!? Weird. Both pap images solitary, not a stream of pics released? Do paps actually take a single image of a moving car? They don’t. Strong case for both pap pics being fakes. If paps wanted images of Carole Middleton out and about as she helps her daughter’s family while she recuperate at home, we would have them in spades. Or William at back entrance of hospital daily. Easy. Clearly, there has been a deal struck for privacy w/ UK media and an expectation they not bite the hand that feed them. So then why did they agree?

If the outlets have agreed to lie for the royals then there is an argument to be made that this crisis is existential for the Crown and its media ecosystem. There are pics of an ambulance rushing from Sandringham to the hospital on December 28. Kate was reportedly at that location for the holiday so it might well have been her in that motorcade that evening. What illness could be the end of the crown? A repeat of Diana’s nightmare. Could this have involved self-harm? Honestly, I just can’t think of any other illness that would warrant this kind of media lockdown and absolute vanishing. Everyone falls ill. That is in fact sympathy generating. Perhaps they don’t trust Kate to say what they need her to say? The worldwide media frenzy could be shutdown in a minute if they were capable of doing so. Apparently, they are not. I hope she’s just bloated though. If so, their entire PR department needs to be fired yesterday.

Exactly. Kate does respect and honor her role. She would help quell the rumors regardless of how she looks as it's now damaging KP's credibility. She's not willing to work with them so something serious is happening outside of health issues

I think the fact that she signed up for this suggests the Eton theory is wrong. Like someone 100 pages back stated, she seems like she was build in a lab for this life. No way would she throw such a public fit about something totally expected, no matter how displeased she was about it.

And she didn’t have a little boy of her own then or realize the potential abuses at a boarding school.

She had issues at boarding school herself. So, not naive.

She has no leverage if he wants her out. The tone of her coverage has markedly changed, not a coincidence. He has stopped referring to her at appearances. He has used his solo letterhead. She was thrown under the bus re: the photo that in all likelihood was a set up. She had nothing to do with it and likely does not have access to their social media accounts. It was a dig at her prior competent/asset image and a dig at the hobby she is well known for. Stories painting her as volatile and throwing things started to run last year, portraying them as "equally bad."

Whether it is about a 3rd party or not remains to be seen. He is not even faking being a doting, protective husband at this point.

If there are differences over the kids going forward, he holds the trump cards, especially as her family's wealth has tanked.

All the cries that they can't get divorced when CHARLES is divorced as silly.

This is my line of thinking. As most marital arguments, it's just a symptom of a bigger issue. In this case they aren't on the same page anymore. They had an easy way out by just admitting it was mistake from their staff office. Putting it on Kate sent a nasty message.

My sense is that Charles was kinder and more deferential to Diana re: the children than William will be (in part due to trauma/damage from Diana's mental illness during his childhood, William is not going to share power this round). It's more than the marriage seeming broken, it's that the "machine" is now tarnishing her image actively, despite it being a time when the opposite would be expected by the public out of basic decency while they are claiming she is quite "ill." In fact, she may be.

It's pretty extraordinary, but if you look back there have been more negative stories placed about her for a year or so, very "both sides" (linked upthread or Google) but now she is "unstable" etc. and "wanting out" when she may be being pushed out. She has no power in the situation that I can see. William's lifelong anger may have found a new target. He seems unwilling to just live apart and fake it for PR anymore.

It seems like William and KP's handling Katw was a big shock for a lot of royal journalists too. As someone (maybe you?) said there's been a noticeable shift in the narrative considering Kate now. They aren't looking out for her and now okay with actively harming her image. Not collaborating might be the only way she's able to hold some control.

I think it is most likely that the photogate was a set up as part of the media campaign to damage her image, along with the solo letterhead and not mentioning her at events anymore. It makes William look callous and cold, but they must not care or feel a plot twist yet to come will vindicate his approach?

We are invested because Diana.
She died because the BRF screwed up.
She desperately loved her boys and although we may not like William, his kids are innocent and need their mother.
