Semester vs Quarter system

What are the advantages? Disadvantages? Would the work be more intensive with the quarter system since it's a shorter term?

You typically take fewer classes in quarter system (at my college we took 3 each term, 3 terms a year, for 9 total per year). At Dartmouth there is also a summer term which adds more flexibility to the schedule - a true quarter system since there are 4 academic periods. You are required to attend during one summer term there (usually Sophomore summer).

Plusses - if you want to go abroad it's typically easier since you are only missing 1/3 of the year. You can focus more on your classes since you are taking fewer. If you hate a class it will be over soon.

Negatives - the school year is a little different than semester schools. You either start later in September or end before Thanksgiving. For winter/spring most seem to start in early January and end in late May/early June. It might be hard in science classes to pack all the labs into 10 weeks.

Also, if you get into trouble with a class there is little time for remediation
