Help, I need some business casual clothing

Anonymous
I have been home for about 4 years and just got a new job. I am ashamed to say that I am pretty out of touch with fashion. For the interview I had a very nice classic designer suit, but for the day-to-day at work I need business casual. I literally only own jeans and yoga pants and have been wearing casual boots and sneakers all winter. Help me! I am tall and thin everywhere but the hips. Literally all the fat in my body is there! To give a size example, Loft size 27 (4) curvy cut jeans fit pretty well.

For basic black pants what length is in? Are cropped at the ankle pants fashionable? Because I am quite tall, I prefer flats. Are the rounded ballet ones still in or are the pointy toed ones more fashionable? Also, is a leather tote in that brown color that matches everything ok? Do you recommend any stores where I could get most everything at one place? Shopping really stresses me out which is why I am so out if touch. Thank you for helping me out!

Focus more on doing a good job, less on pressing issues like rounded or pointy toe shoes. Buy whatever you like.

just to go someplace like Talbots when they are having a sale.

I second Talbots. They often have 30 percent off sales. The leather tote sounds fine. A lot of people wear rounded ballet flats. Pointed toes with kitten heels are making a comeback. I'd get as little as possible at first until you get a feel for the office dress culture.

I say Ann Taylor Loft is a nice place to start.

Pick a store that fits you well.

Get a baby sitter. Give yourself 3 hours.

Go during the day when they are slow. Ask for help.

For tall, I think J Crew and BR work well for business casual and you will be able to get a few outfits there head to toe.

i've never done it, but both Macys and Nordstroms have personal shoppers that might be able to pick out a few outfits for you? I think it's a free service.

I've used Macy's free personal shopper with good results.

If Loft works for you, try Ann Taylor for more business appropriate offerings. Read the corporette blog.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I hadn't even thought about Talbots (thought that it was for my mother) but looked at the website and it looks great. I was happy to see skirts that touch the top of the knee! Lots of other good ideas posted too.

agree with PP about the personal shopper, if you need to start from scratch.

also believe it or not, The Limited has some great business clothes, (a few cheesy things but great jackets and suit pants) and they have sales all the time.

Congrats on the job! Lots of good suggestions here, but to answer your specific question - rounded or pointy toed shoes are both fashionable. Brown tote sounds great. And we're in a pretty good pants world right now where anything goes - a lot of people are wearing slim pants that are ankle-length, so you're on the right track. I think Loft, the Gap, The Limited are all great ideas.

You should also consider hiring a stylist. I used a Groupon for Cathy Starnes and was very pleased with the service she provided. http://stylespeaks.com/ I had her go through my closet and help me put outfits together. She used to work at Nordstrom as a personal shopper and she is very nice and easy to work with.

I really like White House black market.

Call Nordstrom and set up an appointment with a personal shopper. Tell them what you are looking for and they will help you -- let them know if you have a budget, etc.

Seriously, call Nordstrom.
