My son (who will be 4 yrs old soon) and I will be in DC this summer for a few weeks to visit friends. They have a son who will also be 4 this summer. We thought they would enjoy a half-day summer camp. My son has some mild sensory issues so a small nursery school type camp would probably be best (low camper-staff ratio, not too many activities/transitions/staffed by early childhood teachers and not just teenagers). Are there any preschool type summer camps that would fit this description? They both love playing outdoors so a preschool that has a good outdoor space is important too. They also have to be able to take 2 children who don't attend the school during the year. Thanks so much! |
Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church on Chevy Chase circle usually has camps like this, run through their long-running nursery school, but I think a lot of other preschools in the area do too. |
hey OP -- where will you be staying? |
OP here. Probably at my friend's house in the Alexandria area but we are planning on going into DC most mornings to see the sights, museums, etc. I am more concerned about finding a nurturing environment staffed by early childhood teachers. I want my son to have a good time and not be overwhelmed and put into a chaotic environment. My friend said that a lot of private schools offer camps too so maybe one w/ kindergarten teachers in charge would be good. Any other ideas? TIA. |
Sounds like you need a preschool-based camp that offers a half day.

OP. Thanks for the suggestions. Would these schools be open to a child who may need some extra help warming up, etc? I don't want to throw my son in the deep end for his first camp experience. Do these schools accept kids at camp w/ some special needs? I am not familiar w/ the area or the schools. Thanks. |
I have heard good things about Burgundy Farm's Summer Camp.
Burgundy Farm is in Alexandria. |
