Inexpensive, But High Quality Summer Camp

Anonymous
Too much to ask? We're facing tuition for two children for the upcoming school year and need to cut back drastically from what we typically spend on summer camp (and summer vacation ). Any ideas for camp in DC or MD?

You could try the YMCA camps.

I would be very very cautious about using the Y. I used to work for them and what went on behind the scenes of running the camp was atrocious, at least at my branch.

Hi..Which branch did you work at if I may ask?

Some program have financial assistance - you can always ask about getting some aid.

My daughter went to some of the summer camps at the Y in Reston last summer. My husband and I were very disappointed and she did not like them at all. Honestly the whole thing was pretty worrying and I still stress about it when I think back.

We have friends who were unhappy with the Y in Silver Spring.

What about county camps? Did you say where you are located?

OP here. Thanks for the responses. We're in Montgomery County. I'm a SAHM, so we wouldn't qualify for financial aid. I'm really just looking for something low-key, perhaps even a 1/2-day camp....or even somewhere for the kids can just swim or take swim lessons during the day for an hour or two.

What about the MoCo Rec camps? I've heard from parents that have liked them a lot, and they seem very inexpensive.

People seem to like the nature camps at Brookside Gardens and other Mont Co. nature centers. I've heard that they aren't expensive (but haven't tried). Also, maybe audobun society.
