Heating costs per month - what are you paying?

Anonymous
I know costs have gone up, but we paid $350 for gas heat and $120 for electric last month. Our house is tiny (1,200 sq. feet), but old so I know it is not energy efficient. But still we were a bit shocked esp since our heat is set at 68 degrees from 5pm-11pm and then 66 degrees the rest of the time.

What is everyone else paying?

About the same. I was shocked by the 350 too.

Our house is 6,000 SF but very energy efficient. We keep the heat at 62. Gas heat and bill is around $350. Our electricity bill is $80.

I was shocked because mine was $173 for my 2600sq ft house. I keep the heat at 65, and rooms and keep the vents into the bathrooms and less used rooms, closed.

We have electric heat around 70 degrees and our winter bills are usually $170 or $180. If it is super cold we might get to $200. Our house is 3 finished levels, 4BR, 2FB, 2HB, regular old Ryan Homes colonial. We had the windows replaced a few years ago and that made a HUGE difference.

2nd the windows. The ppl we bought our house from did this - and our bill for 2400 sq feet is about $200 combined gas and electric. The only door that wasn't replaced is the door to the outside in the basement - a sliding glass door - and you can feel the cold air just poring in constantly.

My dad was just here and was commenting on how he can even touch our windows and they don't feel cold. He was very impressed with them.

I may be illustrating my ignorance, but shouldn't the cost be coming down a bit due to the decrease in oil prices? I know that somehow or other the actual price the heating company purchased fuel at is being passed onto the customer and the $40.00 per barrel fuel would be actually consumed in the summer (when we don't need it,...)
Help me understand when we get the benefit of this!

This explains things well.

Our bill is easily $250 to $300 a month, but we are all electric. Old townhouse with bad windows. I thought the fireplace would help but it just makes it colder. The heat is usually on 68, with the fire it gets down to 66 and the heat is certainly not rising anywhere but up the chimney.

I have oil based heat and my costs are really low right now. I pay for 275 gallons at a fill. This lasts me about 3 months. Right now the 275 gal cost 1.99. So, my cost per month is approx $180. My house is 2500sq feet and 50 years old.

I just got my gas bill and it's $301, up from 190 just last month. I also use a space heater at night. I'm turning the heat down!!!

To the poster with the fireplace:

Fireplaces do send the heat up the chimney. You can get a wood stove insert to put in your fireplace, essentially converting your fireplace into a wood stove, which is a great way to put the heat in your home instead of the chimney. I don't know that much about their cost because we have a traditional wood stove-- which we love-- but I know they are increasingly popular.

Our bill was $320 last month. The main floor and above footage is 3000. The temp is set at over 70.
