Girl Scout summer day camps

Anonymous
I received a catalog from the Girl Scouts for their summer camps. They seem pretty cool and are very affordable. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get in? Any experiences to share?

My daughter is a Daisy now, but I think graduating to Brownie after she finishes 1st grade this year. We are in NoVa.

The Girl Scout Camps are outstanding and a great value, as you can see from comparing prices with private camps. Check out the information about the For Girls Only program at Camp Winona. It's open to girls your daughter's age to go with a parent and is only 3 nights. If you can take your daughter, you'll get a first-hand view of what the facilities, activities, staff and overall experience would be for her on her own in the future. It is a great experience. Day/Eve. Camps are also wonderful. Most camps (both sleep-away and day/eve) have wait lists, sometimes up to 100 girls, so the camps are in high demand. Be sure to follow application instructions EXACTLY, especially paying attention to application window dates. If a camp says "applications must be postmarked no earlier than" or "no later than", than absolutely follow it. In many cases, your best bet is to take the application to the post office on the first day applications are accepted and take it to the counter for hand cancellation on that date. Some camps are moving to online applications as well. Almost all day/evening camps use a lottery, choosing applications at random from those who followed directions. Good luck and happy camping!!

Thanks for the help. Should I apply to one or two?

For the day/eve. camps, sometimes people do apply for more than one camp for the same week, in case they don't get in to one of them. If you do that, and you get into both, you should really notify the director right away once you decide which camp to attend so that they can call someone on the wait list before they make other plans. For different weeks, you can apply to as many as you want. I heard of one parent who sent her daughter every day all summer, because it was cheaper than her day care. Go figure.
