Wilson HS basketball

DS currently plays middle school basketball in DCPS and would love to continue playing at Wilson. He's passionate and hard-working but not a standout talent. Do any parents have direct experience with how tough it is to make the Wilson 9th grade team? Do you need to be an AAU elite-level player to make that team, or do those kids go private and/or directly to the JV or varsity teams?

After seeing a kid dunk in a DCPS middle school game and seeing some of the super talented high school kids at the WCAC tournament (many of whom seem to have multiple offers from DI universities), he's starting to think that he probably can't play in high school. I want to support him but also want to be realistic.

Thanks.

No personal knowledge as of late, but based on information and belief, if your kid is a decent MS DCPS player I'd say he has a shot to make the frosh team at Wilson. It will be easier to make that team than the frosh team at Gonzaga or St. John's. AAU elite kids go private and directly to varsity. He should work out hard starting now and go to a couple of good camps this summer. good luck to him.
