How about a children's Bible? You could also do a savings bond along with a note congratulating him on this important occasion. The parents would appreciate that more than he would.

Not sure if rosary beads are universal

I recently got a four year old boy two nice edition classic children's books as a baptism gift. I'm not very religious so it seemed awkward to me to get a religious gift.
