Maury "feeder pattern"

Anonymous
I checked out the new "feeder pattern" tool and found it interesting. Curious about Maury, however. According to the tool, all the Maury kids went to either Stuart-Hobson or Eliot-Hine for MS. This was in contrast to Brent, where most of the kids went to BASIS or Latin. To me this suggests high-SES Maury families are still jumping ship out of DCPS altogether before they get to 4th or 5th grade, whereas Brent parents are sticking around and playing the lottery for charters. Is this accurate? Does anyone who is at the school currently see this changing? Or can someone share a different perspective? Thanks.

That's a pretty big assumption. My take is that many Maury kids are IB for Stuart Hobson so that helps keep a cohort of Maury kids at Maury through 5th. Whereas not enough Brent parents are IB for S-H to keep a cohort at Brent through 5th-- especially since Latin and BASIS are good options for 5th grade. And those schools are generally convenient for Brent parents transportation wise-- generally more convenient than for Maury kids. So different factors at balance for high SES Maury kids and high-SES Brent kids.

Transportation to Latin and BASIS is just as convenient for Maury kids as for Brent kids.

I would say that the gentrification wave has not yet hit the upper grades at Maury and is already 2 years in the pipeline at Brent.

Before the Brent Neighbors crew hit the upper grades at Brent, the distribution to middle schools looked pretty much like Maury's, except that there was a secret pipeline to Hardy MS as well.

On a related note, do people see the gentrification wave hitting the upper grades at Maury anytime soon, or are families still dropping out early?

Oh, if only Maury, Brent, SWS and Tyler SI all really fed into Elliot Hine (and I mean kids actually followed those feeder patterns). A girl could dream about that sort of neighborhood middle school on the Hill.

There are several high SES families with kids in 4th this year.

I would bet 85% or more of these people live at addresses that currently have a choice to attend Hine - whether or not the school itself feeds there. Dream come true! Now what?

Eastern Market bus to Latin is 4 blocks from Brent. How many blocks from Maury? At least 14. How many blocks is Maury from Latin's Union Station/Logan School bus? 12-ish? And would you rather haveyour middle schooler take the Penn Ave bus down to BASIS? Or X2?

OP, your premise is wrong: We're "high SES" and our kids went to Maury, then Stuart-Hobson, not the only ones either. Several "high SES" parents have kids at Eliot-Hine, coming in from Maury. I think what you can say is, that Maury is possibly a little more political, politically agile, and willing to roll up their sleeves and get the work done. In fact, Maury has long attracted a high number of "high SES" families from around town. I've got a few blisters on my hands but our kids are thriving, possibly for all those reasons.

Or did you mean black?

NP. Transportation aside, I do think having a guaranteed spot at S-H makes a difference. Brent kids absolutely could lottery in to S-H, but if they have to lottery anyway, they might as well try for Latin, BASIS, etc.

I think this experiment is still on with Eliot Hine. But you are totally correct that both Maury and Brent have long attracted middle class and academically ambitious families from all over the city.

I think PP who points to commuter patterns has a point. Not only that, for IB Maury parents, many of whom live around the North-Lincoln Park area (yes, some IB for Stuart, too), neither Union Station, nor H Street, nor Rosedale, nor Stadium Armory, are fear-inducing, black holes (anymore). Not only do Brent neighbors typically not drive through there to work, many probably still entertain notions of bullet-riddled houses, which alas at this point sell for up to a million. Check it out some time.
