I know there are dozens of factors, and that in many ways this question is silly. Still, I am curious whether our DD's 99.8 percentile on the FSIQ make her stand out - force the ADs to take a closer look etc? To what extent does it make a difference beyond getting a 99 percentile? |
DC, who scored 99.7 FSIQ, was waitlisted at the two schools applied to, FWIW.

Not in this area but maybe if you lived outside of a large Metro area that has never heard of IQ testing for preschoolers. |
Here, this will help you understand the respective "rarity" of given scores:
http://www.iqcomparisonsite.com/IQtable.aspx Essentially, a score of 99.7 means your talking about 1 child in every 400 or so, and a score of 99.8 means you're talking about 1 child in every 600 or so. Compared to 99.0, which is basically 1 child in every 100. Or compared to 99.9, which ranges from 1 child in every 1000 to 1 child in every several million, depending on the following decimal point. |
But what OP is asking is the rarity of these scores in the population applying to DC private schools. Conventional wisdom says such high scores are very common in that crowd. |
I respect your opinion but I think you're going a little overboard. Her child tested 1 in 600. I think you're overstating the intellect of children in this area. Most children I know are certainly very privileged, but that doesn't necessarily translate into making them little geniuses. Most are very average in terms of intelligence. Some aren't that bright at all. I just don't believe that DC is some mecca for genius children who all score 99 or higher...it's not like it's in the drinking water or something. |
Not according to one school director that I spoke with....these numbers are still very impressive. Lots of kids in this area are testing in the eighties. |
I think it depends on your definition of "stand out". Will it guarantee admission into the school of your choice, whatever that is? No, of course not. Will it get you a good look from the admissions team? Yes, I think so. Even in this area, a Full Scale at the 99.8 is not common. |
OP here: the last response is obviously what I was hoping for! Thank you. I understand its no guarantee, but it is a real relief to know that there is something in the application that will at least warrant a close look. We aren't wealthy or connected, so every little bit helps from what I understand. |
I think the most important thing you can do is to make it clear to your top school that it IS your top school. At least that helped us (more than DC's score, which was 99+). |
