TPMS 6th grade math

Anonymous
I just found out that my son, who is currently doing 7th grade math at Piney Branch, will have to take 6th grade math again at Takoma Park Middle School since he's not in the Magnet program. I've called the counselors and left a msg for the principal at Takoma Park. anyone else have this experience at Takoma Park Middle School in the past? Seems ridiculous.

I wouuld talk first to your son's teacher and the counselor at Piney Branch.

My fifth grader is currently doing 7th grade math at an HGC and will do IM next year at the middle school (not magnet program, not TPMS).

thanks. i've been told it's a decision that's been made by TPMS not MoCo Public schools.

How is he doing 7th grade math at Piney Branch? I thought MCPS eliminated that kind of acceleration in elementary?

I'm the PP AT 12:18. That would make me angry.

Do you know any parents in his math class who will go to TPMS non-magnet? If you could round them up into an organized protest, that might be more effective than if it were just you.

Absolutely ridiculous...don't let it happen. My DD has 5th graders in her 6th grade IM class. IM is no doubt taught at the school so there is no extra cost to one more child. You might have to fight for it but you can and should make it happen. Many 6th graders in MCPS take IM.

That's odd, and must be a new policy. My son, currently an 8th grader at TPMS, took IM in 6th after completing Math 6 at Piney Branch. He is not in the magnet. Definitely press for an answer. That seems goofy.

Very odd. My kid is one year ahead in math and was given the option to take IM next year in 6th grade at two middle schools. The math teachers at Takoma and your son's current math teachers at Piney Branch should be able to coordinate efforts to ensure proper placement. Good luck.

I was recelty told by my MS (not Talkoma) that anything that is not an MCPS rule can be overridden by a parental request.
