Cancun for Toddlers?

Anonymous
I'm going to Cancun in Feb w/ my DH's family. We will bring our 2 and 3 year olds with us and be staying in a rented condo on the beach. Any tips for things to do with small children there from others who have recently gone?

Many thanks!

I don't have any tips, but you will find a ton to do with the kids. Does your condo have a pool? Otherwise the beach will keep them occupied for several hours. They also have a lot of guide books throughout the town that list different activities.

You should be fine in Cancun, but here is a link to the state dept's travel alert on Mexico. It is getting a lot more violent, and tourists are being targeted, primarily along the US/Mexico border. One of the major news shows did a story within the last week about the killings, kidnappings, etc.

The travel alert is for border areas. There is very little danger for tourists in Cancun, other than petty theft. Mexico does not want to jeopardize tourism $$$. You probably need to be just as careful as in DC.

Hang on the beach. There is tons to do!

True, the alert first discusses the border, but then goes on to warn about incidents throughout Mexico. As I mentioned, though, you are probably fine in Cancun, but there is no reason not to follow the tips about keeping safe.

I went last year and the beach still is not recovered from the hurricane a few years ago. Its very narrow at places with big waves, rocks, and lots of undertow - I wouldnt swim in it and mostly they had red flags up from the lifeguards. Depends on where you are probably. So i hope you have access to a pool as well.

Cancun is like Miami to me. Very built up with lots to do, great restaurants, safe food etc. The water is very beautiful and we enjoyed going to isla de mujeres as an outing. THAT has a gorgeous (no waves) beach with friendly beach front restaurants which made for a great day. It is a short ferry ride. You can go cheaply by using public bus/taxi to the ferry dock and then a public ferry ride to the island. There are constant (50cents?) buses that run along the main drag of cancun and that is fun for little kids.

We stayed at the one of the royal resorts which i also recommend for anyone else with young kids as they have tons of interconnected pools and nice activities for the kids.
