Infant Passport

Anonymous
My daughter is a month old and my husband and I would like to take her abroad in another month to meet his family. I have read conflicting advice about getting an infant passport. Specifically I am unsure whether I need to have her social security number, and if so if there is a way to get her number other than waiting for it in the mail. I applied for it at birth, but I have read that it can take 8 weeks for it to be processed. I would appreciate any information from those who have applied previously. Thanks.

Hi,

Our daughter was born mid July and we had her passport by early Sept - that was without getting anything expedited. As soon as we got the ssn (which I'm pretty sure you need) and the birth certificates in the mail ( I don't remember how long it was exactly but it was shorter than 8 weeks, we're in MD) we went to the post office to apply for the passport - it arrived within a week after that

I had previously called the State Dept about this. If you don't have the SSN, go ahead and apply for the passport. Explain that you haven't received the SSN yet. Apparently, you don't have to have it to apply.

But the woman on the phone explained that some passport offices won't let you apply without one. So she suggested just trying another office. However, officially you do not need the SSN.

You can actually get a passport the same day that you go to the DC office. I think it is on K street
