Ideas for baby teething on crib rail

DS has started to go after the crib rail this week -- and sometimes he lunges so hard he bonks his teeth hard enough to hurt himself. He picked up these gummi covers at B-R-Us, but they seem kind of thin to protect him from one of his harder bonks. Not sure this is the answer for him (plus I'm reading elsewhere that these gummis pull the paint off the crib eventually).

So, we are thinking about tying towels to the railing -- anyone ever try this method or something else. Thanks everyone!

actually, we sewed on pillow shams on our son's crib b/c he was chewing off the paint. it worked really well!
