| It really was too much for me in the Washington Post this AM--pictures of 7 year old girl told by her mother that she was taking her to a "surprise birthday party. They show the excited happy girl in the picture. Then she is grabbed and held down and circumsized--clitoridectomy. The girls face is shown in twisted agony. It is the one of the most horrible sequence of images I have ever seen in the Post. I went in our bedroom, closed the door and wailed with tears when I saw it. Then I went downstairs and hugged and cuddled with my 7 year old for what seemed like a long time. It was really too much. This is an ingrained part of their religious patriarchal culture--what can we really do to make this stop? |
| The thought of it makes me sick. I missed the photos this morning but don't think I have the stomach for it. |
| Truly horrifying. |
| You know, boys are circumcised in the U.S. everyday...I'm just saying... |
Please, this is not the same. The clitoris is brutally cut off. Removed. No one is cutting a boys penis at the root. That would be comparable. Removing a boy's foreskin is like piercing a baby's ear lobe in terms of nerve endings. apples and oranges, really. |

I'm sorry but that is absolute unmitigated bullshit! Would it be okay if they only cut a little bit off the girl's clitoris? Or maybe just her labia? Of course not. The foreskin is a VERY sensitive part of the penis and has to be ripped away (like ripping off a fingernail) from the skin it is bonded to, before it is cut off, usually with no anesthetic. Studies have proven the reduced sensitivity in circumcised penises. Both practices are brutal, primitive customs that should be brought to an end. When I decided not to circumcise any boys I might have, it was the revulsion and horror I felt over FEMALE circumcision that made me realize that we are just so used to male circumcision we deny it's brutality. I bet if you asked the folks who circumcised that little girl they would tell you that it was no big deal too - that's how mothers can justify doing something like that to their kids - "it's the custom" "it's always been done that way" "it doesn't really hurt THAT much" "all the other girls have it done so it must be ok." Wrong is wrong. |
| does anyone know what's the purpose of the kurds clitoridectomy? and the circumcision in US? |
| I honestly could not believe that the Post printed those pictures. I'm sure they would never print pictures of a boy baby being circumcised. It really was too much. I feel those images are a form of child pornography. Horrible. |
| Agree with 18:43, and I did circumcise my son (we're jewish). I think it's a disgusting custom, and like the mother in the article, will encourage my children not to do it. |
Child pornography? You are sick if you associate that with child pornography. |
Plus, a baby doesn't remember the mutalation unlike an impressionable 7 year old girl - she will forever think of "surprise birthday parties" as a horrendous experience. |
I thought I read some where (a very long time ago) that it was discourage sexual relations. Anybody fill in the blanks for me on that one? Law & Order fans -wasn't there an episode about something similar a long time ago - where the "doc" who did this stuff was murdered by the mother of a young girl who was about to undergo this? |
| Well, maybe in my horror I used the wrong terms. Excuse me for thinking those pictures did not belong in the daily newspaper. I feel those images should not have been printed. They are invasive of that little girl's privacy and I feel exploit her misery. |

And male circumcision does not affect the sexual health of a man FOREVER. Most women who are circumcised cannot have orgasms, have painful sex, etc. The act of female circumcision should in no way be compared to male circumcision. I am actually appalled that anybody would compare the two. When you look at the health risks below, I am pretty sure you will see that there is just no comparison.
Here are some of the health risks from female genital mutilation: Other serious long term health effects are also common. These include urinary and reproductive tract infections, caused by obstructed flow of urine and menstrual blood, various forms of scarring and infertility. Epidermal inclusion cysts may form and expand, particularly in procedure affecting the clitoris. These cysts can grow over time and can become infected, requiring medical attention such as drainage.[68] The first time having sexual intercourse will often be extremely painful, and infibulated women will need the labia majora to be opened, to allow their partner access to the vagina. This second cut, sometimes performed by the partner with a knife, can cause other complications to arise. |
