DCUM, your great recommendations have not let me down yet.
DH and I are retiring our old bed linens, some dating from grad school. I want something decidedly more upscale. DH only cares that it be as soft as possible. I've started researching what's out there - but so many brands and thread counts, I'm now dizzy, and figured I'd just turn it over to the wise ones at DCUM. So, recommendations (brands/stores), please? |

My favorites are from Target. I got them as wedding presents and think my parents might have the same ones as well. I'm not positive these are them (it's been a few years) but they look like this:

| We got some lovely damask stripe sheets from Macy's recently--Charter Club brand, 400 thread count. On sale now! I think they're on close-out, supposedly because the next round of them will have be 500 thread count. But we've been really happy with them. |
| Egyptian cotton is softer. Thread count should be higher than 300, but anything over 400 isn't a huge difference. 100% cotton is softer after a couple of washes, but it wrinkles a lot! A little polyester helps sheets look better after they are washed. |
| I have really bought the range ($1000 SHEETS? Yes...) and I am happy with my 400 count Egyptian from TARGET. We wash all sheets once a week and they hold up and I do not feel bad when they need to be replaced once a year. |
| for really soft, affordable sheets, the bamboo ones at Target are great. |

I've got some high thread count sheets from Overstock.com that are super soft, although it took a few washings before they lost their stiffness. It's been a while since I bought them, so not sure which ones they were, but I think they're about 800 count. Lots of reviews on their website.
I also like the Ralph Lauren cotton sateen sheets we received as a wedding gift, but I use them mostly in summer as they're very light--when you shake them out they just float down over the bed. Lately we've been using fleece sheets that my mom got us for Christmas last year, very warm! |
| somewhat related so i hoping can someone recommend a good down pillow source? ours are very very old ... |
| Great on-line resource (expesnive but I love them) is garnethill.com. They also have a mail order catalogue. I bought the crazy expensive garnet hill sheets and pillow cases and then bought the duvet cover and pillow shams from crate and barrel to try to average things out. We love our sheets! |

I like my 400 thread count cotton sateen sheets.
the cotton sateen seem to be softest imo. Or at least they were softest of the options I found years ago when I went feeling up sheets in the store to find my (then) new ones.

Love Yves Delorme for great cotton.
Garnet Hill for the softest, thickest flannel you've ever felt. Beech (like bamboo) that I got from Bed Bath and Beyond feel almost silky. Don't remember the brand, but inexpensive and eco-friendly. |
| Shabby Chic from Target. Seriously. I have bought many more expensive sets, but these are great and very reasonable. I have also gotten sets that I have been very happy with at Ikea in the past. |
| Garnet Hill for their Jersey Knit and flannel sheets. Also a caveat about high thread counts, I bought some 600 thread count sheets once...they were really soft and silky, but I wore a hole in them with my pregnancy-induced tossing and turning! They felt nice but weren't very durable. |
