School Bus Question/FCPS

Anonymous
DC starts school in September, and another child still be in daycare so drop off and pick up at two different places. I usually telework two days per week and DH sometimes teleworks once per week. On telework days, it would be more convenient for DC to take the school bus. However, would taking the bus 2-3 days per week be a problem? Does the school bus allow that? This is for FCPS. We will be paying for before school care even though we don’t need it full time because on non-telework days, DC would need to be dropped off earlier than the time the school bus arrives.

As long as the child care is in your school district, I don't think it will be a problem.

I'm in MoCo, but our school bus just picks up whoever is there. If you're there some days and not there other days it's not a problem. We live walking distance, although a long walk, from school and sometimes on nice day, DS would skip the bus. It was never an issue.

Totally fine. However, if your kid is the only kid at the stop, let the bus driver know your schedule.

Regarding the trip home, if your child does not take the bus on a daily basis, do you send a note telling the school the child (kindergarten) will be taking the bus home today or do you just tell the child to take the bus that day??

Send a note - teachers generally know how their students get home and if there is a change, they really need to hear it from the parents. While your child may be responsible and can tell the teacher, they are reluctant to send kids on buses unless they are certain that the bus is the way they are getting home that day. And, kids are not always the most reliable source for information.

Don't count on the teacher to remind your child when to take the bus and when not to. It will be on you/your child. The teacher has a lot going on at the end of the day and will not always remember to remind your child how he/she will be going home.

I think on telework days, you should pick up in the afternoon to avoid confusion.
