Seriously, when is UMD going to merge with the baltimore professional campus .

After merger like every other big ten school UMD will be a top 5 research institution with 1 billion plus per year. Which it already is except for semantics.

Except that Baltimore and CP aren't particularly close. Doesn't make sense to me that it would be one school.

Maryland has an interest in keeping the two separate. If combined, like almost all universities do, UMD has a billion plus research budget. That would draw attention to UMD as only behind Hopkins in research funding with Michigan dwarfed in 3rd place with 650 million a year (almost half). It would be politically problematic to have the two biggest research schools in maryland if it was commonly known. UMD has installations of FDA NASA NSA NIST NOAA, Dept of agriculture , the center for international language , homeland security , national archives, the American physics institute, and the national weather prediction institute on campus. It's not fair and it's a huge reason other than UMD has the most defined and lucrative TV market for college sports , that the BIG TEN and ACC are in an all out war for UMD.

I'm confused by this -- why not fair? Whose feelings are hurt? Why can't you have two dominant research institutions in one state?

I'm only familiar with the medical center and I think having two high caliber research institutions in one city creates a rich atmosphere that benefits them both. Baltimore rivals Boston in terms of the general level of medical care because of these two institutions.
