when weaning a toddler from breast do you give a bottle?

Personally, I see no harm in a bottle. I didn't wean my child completely off a bottle (to sippy cup) until closer to 16 months, and still gave him a bottle when he was sick for a few months after that. And the two bottles that took the longest to give up were first in the morning and last at night. He did fine with a sippy during the day. If it takes some stress off of both of you, I say go for it. You can transition to 100% sippy cups later.

Hi. I am still breastfeeding my 20 month old as well and he doesn't love a sippy cup. I try to give him water in the cup and sometimes he takes it and sometimes he doesn't. I was hoping that he would self wean but so far he has no interest at all. I was told by my doctor that I should give a cup and not bottle (he is too old for a bottle). He explained that if I gave a bottle then I would eventually have to introduce the sippy cup - by just giving the sippy cup you eliminate this step. Anyway, just do whatever works for you. It is hard weaning a toddler, isn't it? Best of luck.

I weaned DD directly to a sippy cup at 15 months. I bought every type of sippy cup I could find, took out the valves, filled them with formula, not milk, and basically poured them into her (yes, formula poured all down her face and front) until she finally decided that it was an easier way to get nourishment than breast feeding. After she got it, then I reintroduced the valves. It took a little while, but saved me from weaning to a bottle, and then to the cup.

My toddler was on bottles anyway because I worked 4 days outside the home, so when I got pg with #2, she naturally wanted more bottles and less of me since my milk supply plummetted. So anyway, I think it is practical to skip bottles, but it might be easiest to wean if you give bottles over sippys. But then I never totally weaned her. She naturally wanted to nurse less because I wasn't producing milk, but now she still nurses about once a day after the baby came.
