Questions regarding glucose tolerance testing

Anonymous
So I just found out I have to do the three hour glucose tolerance testing and I have a couple of questions.

First, how long did you fast for before? Dr's office told me to ask the testing center, testing center told me to ask doc, but I have to go first thing Monday morning so I don't know what to do.

Second, would NOT eating possibly have thrown off the results of the first test? To me it would seem that it would have made it lower, but I am curious as I had a crazy day during my last test and had only a bite of a sandwich and a sip of soda before running to the doc's office.

Thanks!

I am certainly no expert but here is my experience. I was asked to fast the night before for both tests. I was also told that the reason why is that food might raise the blood sugar levels. If you choose not to fast, you might want to make sure any food you intake is mostly protein and not sugary (like bread as part of a sandwich, or a soda would be I imagine).

If you go to the Labcorp website, you can find their recommendations. If I remember correctly, they want you to fast for 8 hours before the test.

I also had to do this test after failing my 1 hur. I had an 8am appointment and could not eat after midnight the night before. I was allowed to drink water throughout the night and throughout the test...which was great because by noon I was starving but at least not dehydrated. Also, drinking water helps with the blood draws because your blood isn't too think. Good luck!
