| Our son is applying to three privates and a public, and his first choice is the public. However, private school letters are mailed nearly a month before public school ones, and responses due soon after-what are we supposed to do if we don't yet know whether or not he got into his first choice? |
You may have to put the deposit down if you want to reserve the spot at the private. You can see if they'll give you an extension, but they all know about TJ and the timeline so I don't think they routinely hand out 10-14 day extensions. It is possible if you are a FA applicant they might be a little more willing to grant the extension and not make you put down a deposit? |
| It's not for TJ, not am I FA, unfortunately. |
|
Privates don't give extensions. Be prepared to lose your deposit if the public comes through.

| This happened to our neighbor for high school. Public was his first. They put the deposit down on the private and hoped he'd get into public. He did, and they lost deposit. But son is happy at public. |
| Well, it doesn't hurt to ask for an extension, but most likely you'll need to pay and ultimately lose the deposit. It's a drop in the bucket compared to what you would save for four years of public instead of private high school, at least. |
Agree. Look on it as if you're paying $1000 (or whatever the deposit is) to be sure of having an acceptable option if the public doesn't come through. |
