Do you put your child ages 5-8 in a car seat?

I'm shocked that it's VA law that kids under 8 must sit in a car seat. Really?!? My daughter is going to have a canary when she gets in and sees her pink car seat from 4 years ago waiting for her. You can get by with just the bottom booster, right?

Yes, I just moved my 5 yr old to a bottom booster this year. We use one with a back most of the time but have the just bottoms for when we're carrying additional kids.

where do you live? You're visiting Va. from some other state and you've realized you need a carseat for DD?

Yes, you can use the bottom booster.

My 5yo still rides in a 5-point harness. It's not at all unusual among our friends and I plan to keep him in it as long as possible.

So does my 5 yr old. Seriously, why not?

What do you imagine 'as long as possible' is? My 5 year old just hit 40 pounds so I need to buy him a new seat. I'm trying to figure out how long I can reasonably expect him to ride in a 5 point harness. Some go up to 80 pounds, but is it reasonable to expect a child who weighs 80 pounds to be in a 5 point harness seat? How old would that mean they'd be?

pp: don't know the answer to your question but do make sure you factor height in as well.

I'm 22:44.

My son was 40 pounds before he turned 4, so you've probably got longer than I have!

He's in a Sunshine Kids Radian 80, but he's tall for his age, so I really don't know how much longer we have. I'm guessing another 2-3 years if I'm lucky. Once he outgrows the seat, I won't have a problem putting him in a booster, but he's happy and we're happy now.

Thanks, this was the seat (or the one that goes to 65 pounds) that I was considering.

Yikes, my 18 month old just weighed in at 40 pounds 8 ounces., 39 inches tall.

My 5yo is still in his Marathon, he's skinny so we're good for a while.
