Barack the Magic Negro.

Has anyone heard about this?
I can't believe that there are republicans defending this. Where are we going?
Anonymous
My understanding is the term "Magic Negro" was actually used by the LA Times and it was picked up and used by Limbaugh in the song. Personally, I think that the song is in bad taste. However, when you say "where are we going?" what exactly do you mean? For eight years Bush has been bashed 24/7. Some highlights include a faux film about his assassination and constant references to him being a "Nazi". Do you really expect respect for this president from Republicans after listening to that kind of garbage for eight years? Besides, I believe it was Jesse Jackson who said he wanted to "cut Obama's nuts out" or something like that. There is a lack of respect all around.

Yes, I expect respect from republicans.
If I look at the big picture, the RNC needs to think about 4 years and 8 years down the road. This does not help. It not only turns off minorities, but many Whites.

Yes, I expect respect. This is not a tit for tat kind of situation. In reference to your statement ("There is a lack of respect all around."), your way of solving it is to fight back by continuing to push racial stereotypes? So I should expect Republicans to lower themselves - to push racism - as a form of retaliation? Let's bring back segregation while we're at it. I'm sure - in your SMALL mind - that would level the playing field.

And yes, Jackson is indeed responsible for his comment - ""I want to cut his [Obama's] nuts off." No one defended him. In fact, he publicly apologized for such a crude remark.

When has Rush Limbaugh ever publicly apologized for any of his disgusting remarks?

Hey, PP, thanks for setting us back 50 years. I'll see you at the white water fountain.

yeah, no one took Jackson's comment and used it as a sample for a rap song and then distributed it.

PP, you're an idiot. Where in my post did I defend the song? I said that I didn't agree with it. Personally, I cannot stand Rush Limbaugh or many of the other conservative personalities. I'm just saying that I find it laughable that because we have a new President, this kind of stuff will not continue to go on. Tell me, did any liberals apologize for some of their outrageous behavior over the last eight years? It was just a couple of weeks ago that people on this board thought it was hilarious that Bush had a shoe thrown at him. I am not a Democrat but I would never find it hilarious if Obama were treated with such disrespect. I don't find the song hilarious either.

As for your stupid white water fountain comment, I have plenty of black friends and I have lived and provided assistance in poor, black neighborhoods that you probably wouldn't step foot in. You don't know anything about me, loser.

Yes, Democrats have treated Bush disrespectfully during the last 8 years. Republicans treated Clinton horribly during the previous 8 years. When does it stop?

Let's start over. We've got a new president who is trying to raise the level of public discourse. Let's all try it.

Such name calling, PP . . . Go take some Oxycontin and chill out. Happy New Year!

19:18, you might want to stop referencing the black friends. It can sound patronizing, but I am sure that your heart is in the right place.

But Bush wasn't criticized for being white. Neither was Clinton. This attack should be deeply offensive to anyone, regardless of their political party.

BTW, the fact that you have black friends does not mean you are sensitive to racism in its many forms, whether overt or insidious. There is no excuse for anyone defending this juvenile ditty.

Again, where did I defend the ditty? I didn't. I only talked about where the term was picked up. The term came from the L.A. Times, not Rush Limbaugh. Why wasn't the LA Times criticized when the editorial was first printed? Why wasn't Jesse Jackson ex-communicated from the Democratic party after his hateful comments? Why is Sarah's Palin's daughter referred to as white trash? Wouldn't Obama's mother also be considered white trash since she was a pregnant, unwed teenager? I'm just pointing out the double standard here.

A PP said that we should try to move away from this kind of rhetoric on both sides. I couldn't agree more but I don't see it happening. Just as an example, look at some of the recent threads on this board "Let's talk about Sarah Palin!" "Why do Europeans hate Bush so much?" and of course, the Bush shoe incident that everyone was cheering on. Look, Bush is finally out of office to the relief of many but liberals are still bashing him. Sarah Palin was on the ticket, her ticket lost and she is still being bashed. If you can't see the hypocrisy here, than you are blind.

I don't know where the previous PP can make such comparisons. Bush was criticized for his actions not his race. The media and the DNC did not call Bush "Magic White Trash".

Jesse Jackson's comments do not denigrate Obama's race with his comments.

This links to the original piece in the LA times. It doesn't criticize Obama for being black; rather it is critical of the persona of the "Magic Negro" as they define it in the piece. I read it as criticism that he was (is?) short on specifics, talked in sound bites, and in general created a magical persona that could cure all ills. It appears to criticize Obama for abandoning genuine "blackness" (whatever that is) to appeal to the white voters as a harmless politician who has everyone's best interests at heart in his color-blind world.

PP, thanks for the link to the original article. PPs, please tell me where the criticism of the LA Times was when the op-ed first came out MONTHS AGO? Was it all over the news? Were democrats protesting out in front of the offices of the LA times? Nope. I guess it is only racist when conservatives use the term. I'm not defending Rush here but if people had such a problem with this, they should have voiced their disapproval with the author of the original article. Everything in Limbaugh's stupid song is referenced in the article. That said, to distribute the song on a CD was just plain stupid.

Black lib/dem female here. Actually the term "magic negro" is a characterization used to describe black roles given in Hollywood generally. Think Ving Rhames, Morgan Freeman, even Will Smith--These are lead or supporting roles played by black actors. They will never have any romantic/sexual link with females characters (black or white) and they will sacrifice their lives to save a (usually) majority white group of people in the film. It is as though the black character is magical, because he has none of the typical human flaws that one would expect--the character has to be portrayed as other-worldly or magical or God-like to make him more palatable to white folks. So. Rush Limbaugh's usage of the term--who cares, really? The man is a codeine addict--why is his junkie riffing of any importance--honestly, he mis-used the term "magic negro" anyway. Junkie.
