Marley & Me (skip the movie and enjoy the book - like always, the book is sooo much better than the movie).

My Sister's Keeper

America America by Ethan Canin; would be a great companion to read with the classic Robert Penn Warren book All the King's Men. Easily two of the best books I have read in the past 10 years (and yes, I was late to discover Robert Penn Warren's prize-winning classic).

What have been previous books, so we can understand the audience?

A few recent books I loved (while on an Africa kick), all have amazing reviews on Amazon and are good LITERATURE.

The Power of One: A Novel by Bryce Courtenay ( do NOT accidentally get the children's version). I could not put this down. It is not only entertaining, uplifting, informative, but the words are just so beautiful I had to read it with my highlighter in hand, not to miss one single mouth watering sentence.

Mukiwa: A White Boy in Africa by Peter Godwin
-then-
When a Crocodile Eats the Sun: A Memoir of Africa by Peter Godwin

The last two are currently very relevant and will give you a really good snapshot of how Rhodesia became Zimbabwe and now has fallen apart. Again, both of these books are longish, but easily read in a week. All 3 of these Africa books should come with a warning that you might not get much sleep, as I found they kept me awake until 2 or 3 am on work nights.

Of course Middlesex: A Novel by Jeffrey Eugenides, but most everyone has already read this.

A classic that everyone must read in their lives: A Thousand Acres: A Novel by Jane Smiley

I could go on and on....

Maybe I'll try All the Kings Men again, I could not get into it. I'm no lightweight, as I can happily sit and read Faulkner, but I found this book so painful.
