Is this wrong? (Bloomingdales Return Policy)

Anonymous
I know this has been done to death already, but I wanted an opinion on my particular situation. I purchased a nylon tote bag from Bloomingdales last January (2013) and just discovered a small hole in the bottom. This is from normal wear and tear - not an accidental damage. I have the same bag in a different color that is older but just fine - many others I know also have the bag and this hasn't happened. Bloomingdales' return policy says that they'll take it back and I can exchange for a new one. I expect a $150 bag to hold up longer than a year, and based on my observations they generally do. But I worked retail in college at a store with a similar return policy and it used to drive me nuts when people would take advantage of it. Is this the same thing (considering I have used the bag for a year), or do you think it's ethical to return (considering this might be a quality issue with this particular bag)?

I don't think it is ethical. It's a nylon bag with a small hole? You likely stuck something through it by accident.

Not ethical. I'm surprised you are even questioning it.

It's fine - this is the gamble that stores take by having generous return policies. LL Bean knows the pit falls and keeps to their return policy where as REI changed it b/c it wasn't working out for them. Corporations want customer loyalty - and sometimes they pay for it with generous return policies. CVS will let you return open, used makeup within a defined period. Nothing unethical about following their rules. However, it is unethical to try to cheat the return policy.

You have used it for a year. It's made of nylon, not leather. It's not ethical to return it.

Personally I wouldn't return it, but that is just me. It looks like Bloomingdales would allow it.

Of course it is ethical. It is within their rules and you are not cheating it.

Now, if you did like someone I knew… she bought something new and return the old one for the money at target. It was some kitchen item.

It's Longchamp, I'm assuming? Those get holes in the corners pretty easily, and while I've never had one get a hole in the bottom I can see how it would occur. You can send it in (or probably get Bloomingdale's to send it in for you) and Longchamp will repair it, usually for free.

I would not return in your circumstance; I would feel unethical doing so. But definitely call or visit the store and see what they suggest. I'm sure they will have a resolution that will satisfy!

Thank you PP, I did not know this was possible! In that case, I'll get on the website and figure out how to send it in. Problem solved
