My child was accepted into an out-of-consortium spot at Parkland Middle school. If she goes there, she wants to take Chinese as her language elective. However, the high schools offering Chinese are very few. She is still set on taking Chinese even if she can't continue and must re-start with a new language in high school.
I took multiple languages in my high school/college experiences and found them very beneficial in honing my English grammar and thinking (especially Latin). I'm not sure if she will have similar benefits from taking Chinese, with the different writing style. Also, I expressed these concerns to the principal and asked what his views were. He replied that if she's interested she should take it, and that if she's interested and takes it now that could help her get into a high school that offers it. Has anyone heard of that scenario? Is it possible to get into (perhaps with a COSA or as an added element to an application for a application program to a school that offers the language? I couldn't help but somewhat doubt this idea... |
High schools are a bit easier to navigate if you only are looking for a single course. My sister was in the French immersion program from elem. through middle. When it came time to go to HS, her zoned HS did not offer the level she needed. She was able to enroll at RM for the french classes that she needed. The caveat to this is that no transportation was provided and my mom had to drive her to 2 high schools. |
So she only took French at RM, but the rest of her courses at her home high school?
|
Yes, most semesters they worked it out so that she was at RM for 1st period. Mom would drive her to RM and she would attend class. Then mom would take her back to our home school where she spent the rest of the day and did activities. |
Many students at my high school take multiple languages. In my Spanish classes I have many students enrolled concurrently in French, Latin, and one in Chinese. If she's interested in Chinese, she should take it. It's not too late to then pick up another language in HS. Our school encourages it. |
I would go for it! Who knows where her interest could lead?
If she loves it, one option is to apply for a magnet program in a school that has Chinese. I know Blair does. I'm sure you could COSA in to one of the east county schools without an issue. |
OP what is your home high school? |
No Blair does not have Chinese. |
+1. I think some families are trying to start Chinese up at Blair, but it's not there yet. Blair does have Arabic and, I believe, Japanese. |
