Having trouble eating solid foods

Anonymous
My son is now 15 months old and is still having a really hard time eating solid food. He can pick up the food, put it in his mouth, move it around/chew, but when it comes time to swallow he spits it out. He is fine with pureed food which still is most of his diet. At his 12 month appointment the doctor thought that he may have some sensory/texture issues and wanted to give him more time to get used to solids before we do anything else. Does anyone have experience with this sort of eating problem and what have you done to teach them to eat?

You might want to consider an OT and/or speech evaluation. Children's has a good developmental rehab department for an OT eval. But, when I had my son's OT eval, the OT did not recommend Children's speech department for feeding therapy, so I don't have any personal experience with that program. For feeding, I used The Language Experience in Rockville. It took a very long time for anyone to realize my son had eating issues and eating was very difficult for us until my son was over four. You are lucky that your doctor is seeing this early. I wish that had been the case for us. We went through years of eating problems (both sensory and oral motor) because my son wasn't diagnosed until much later. AFter just a few months of therapy, my son's speech and eating were practically normal.
