Victims of tax fraud - how long/difficult was it to finally get your refund?

We got an extension to file late and someone apparently filed in our name (and maybe received a refund, it's not clear.) We filed the 14039 form with IRS in Oct. but have heard nothing. Ditto for DC. Anybody been through this? How long does it take and how much hassle?

Note to self, never file late again!
