Getting to GDS from Bethesda

Anonymous
Hoping to get into lower school for the fall, but I live in downtown Bethesda and I'm worried that the commute would be unbearable. Anyone with experience? How bad is it in the morning?

Seriously! GDS is off of River Rd. I can't imagine it taking more than 10 minutes in heavy traffic.

GDS Lower and Middle School is at MacArthur and Q near Georgetown. I can't imagine it would be that bad in the morning. I took my daughter there for her class visit (we are in Potomac) and the traffic on MacArthur was quite light (it gets worse once you approach Canal Road). Just watch for the mobile speed cameras along MacArthur and the stationary speed camera next to the reservoir.

There are lots and lots of GDS students that live in Bethesda, so a car pool will help you stay sane, as well as decrease the congestion at drop-off. We did it for years, and agree with PP that not such a bad commute, probably 20 minutes from downtown Bethesda depending on exactly where. MacArthur really not a major commuting route

You aren't actually serious are you?

My children do not attend GDS, but we've gone there for camps. We live in Bethesda off MacArthur (so probably 10 min closer than you), and it takes us 10-15 minutes (I would allow for 15). The real issue is the car line ...

They have a PM bus to Bethesda, right? Any thoughts of adding an AM?

AM bus goes from the HS (near River Road in Tenleytown) to L/MS school. I think it leaves at 7:30.

Google maps says it's 6.2 miles from Strosniders (close the the center of Bethesda) and will take 16 minutes in heavy traffic. Obviously less time in light traffic. That doesn't seem onerous to me. If you want a closer school you might consider public school as the Bethesda public school neighborhoods tend to be pretty small geographically.

The GDS carpool line is infamous!!!

20 minutes is not realistic

Please carpool and save yourself and the people who live along MacArthur some hassle. If you ignore this advice, please turn the ignition off while you wait, turn it on only to inch forward.

And bring books-on-tape.

Yes, it is a royal pain. But the morning bus should help a lot.
