Infertility Support and Discussion
| I had two IVF's. They used the maximum allowable dosages on me and they both failed. I am a bit nervous because I read that IVF is associated with an increased risk of cancer. Anyone hear about this and do you worry? A loved one is battling cancer right now and the horror of going through this with my family member makes me even more worried. |

Here is a great, recently published article.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/women_shealth/3702141/IVF-drugs-increase-risk-of-cancer-of-womb-study-suggests.html The increased risk still puts you at a less than 1% risk of developing cancer of the uterus (based on this study of 15000 women). I also did 2 IVFs and would have done a 3rd had I not gotten pregnant. That slim chance of developing cancer would not have been enough to keep me from trying to reach my dream of having a family. I guess it's a personal decision. HTH! |
I worried about this too. As far as I have read, the few studies that found a link found a link between clomid and cancer, not a link between IVF drugs and cancer. Thse studies also had flaws in their methods so it seems like the jury is still out (mainly because you can't randomize women to undergo fertility treatments). Plus, pregnancy decreases your risk of breast cancer - so you can always tell yourself it all balances out

| The problem is, there are no long-term (like 25 - 30 year) studies on any of this, right? |
| I have a friend who developed breast cancer related to excess estrogen when her son was 3 months old. In her breast cancer group, there are about half the people there who say they did IVF and wonder if that was the thing that caused it. Of course there is no proof. I think some cancers are quite random, others are hereditary. Any doc's here who can state what they know? |

This is the OP here. Despite this article I'm posting, I will say that my friend, who had 4 IVF cycles, did develop cancer soon afterwards. I would love to hear a doctor's opinion on this though. |
