could read this; unite with MCPS parents and fight the 'teaching to the test' 2.0 curriculum:

I don't have any problem with teaching to the test, if the test is a good test.

Also, I like Curriculum 2.0.

I have no problem with what they teach, I have seen my kids work compared to cousins who are in other schools in other areas as well as private schools and they are doing much harder work and have a better understanding of it.

evolve people evolve.

Same here - I am very happy with what my kids are experiencing in school. These new standards are much more challenging. What is wrong with having children explain what they know in both math and reading?

I am in agreement with you mostly. But the explain what you know in math in a three sentence response to a poorly written question thing is driving me to drink. And, if there was math differentiation by class, my child could be learning at twice the speed she currently is.

I think it is funny that you think teachers have a say in the curriculum.

I think the problem with verbalizing a math procedure is that math and language happen in different parts of the brain. I have a child who can figure out math problems in his head--it is almost an unconscious process. Explaining how he did it is very difficult for him. Yet doing the calculation is the true math skill and being able to do it quickly and effortlessly is the goal, especially when eventually such calculations are just one of many steps in say a physics problem.

I do not believe teaching to the test is beneficial. Teaching to the concepts should be the goal, and writing tests that test those concepts. Teaching to the test is disingenuous and teaches kids that there is no greater purpose than learning the material for a score.

I wish they would correct spelling, grammar and capitalization mistakes, particularly in advanced middle school classes.

I wish they would meet with parents when parents request meetings.

I wish they would stop using so many worksheets with fill in the blank, circle type answers.

Unfortunately in a data driven world that revolves around funding and tax payer money and school and teacher rankings....teachers have very little say in what and how they teach. That is why some teachers prefer to work in private schools because even though the pay is lower they feel they have a lot more freedom and flexibility in what and how they teach.

I know, right?

Since parents and teachers all seem to hate the data driven, test driven, teacher- and school-punishing approach to education of recent years, thanks to NCLB, why aren't parents and teachers organizing mass protests. We returned here form another country that didn't have all this nonsense and we are puzzled why parents and teachers stand for this. No one likes this, we all sit around complaining, did I miss the major protests?
