So i feel like a moron, but I can't figure out where to enter our 529 contributions in turbotax. I called the investment place and they said that they do not send tax forms for contributions only, they only send if you took a distribution. The lady said to just use my year end statement.
Really? I thought that was weird. And without a form, I am not quite sure where to enter this. AND I realized I did not enter it the past three years. DOH |
| It is deductible for state tax purposes only, so once you get to your state tax return, it should ask you whether you had any deductible 529 contributions. I have not been getting any tax statements from either, so I've just been deducting the amount of my annual contribution. |

As PP said, if the contributions are deductible in your state, and you contributed to the plan that qualifies for your state's deduction, then you answer "Yes" when TT asks if you have any qualifying 529 contributions and enter the amount.
There's no specific tax form issued from the 529 to you unless you received a distribution, so you just have to enter the amount you contributed that year based on your records. I always put a copy of my year end statement with my tax file so I would have it on hand in the event of any questions from the state taxation authority. |

I just did my DC taxes on TurboTax and it was on a page listing additional possible deductions (with a warning that they were "rare" deductions).
Good thing I paused and remembered it - it saved me a good $300. |
