Mark Warner - I know he’s an old white man but he was very popular as the Virginia governor and has a track record of bipartisanship that will appeal to many independents and Lincoln Project republicans. I don’t think it has to be a minority/woman candidate. Minorities and women are not idiots. If Warner picks a running mate who skews a little progressive like Pete Buttigeg, that’s a good ticket. Or Gretchen Whitmer.

The simplest thing to do would be for Biden to resign from the presidency immediately, which would allow Kamala Harris to become president now. She would then presumably get all of Biden's delegates for the nomination, not to mention the entire very expensive infrastructure to continue to run an effective campaign through November. And most importantly, she would be regarded as the legitimate Democratic nominee.

The problem is there is no chance Biden resigns before January and the end of his term.

And the second problem is that Kamala Harris is also likely to lose to Trump in the general election. She will not win the battleground states.

So Democrats have a big problem. Even if Biden declares he is withdrawing from contention for the nomination, I do not foresee any circumstances where the democratic coalition unites around a brand new candidate picked by delegates at a three day convention. I think Beshear or Pritzker would win the general easily, but there is no chance progressives are going to accept a white man. And forget about Newsom. A slick Californian who was married to one of the Trump wives is not winning. There are no women POC presently besides Harris that currently have the national stature to run a national campaign in three months. Michelle Obama, alas, will not run, though she would win in a landslide.

I think the only option is Gretchen Whitmer. She's a woman. She's been very effective in turning Michigan into a blue state. She's telegenic. She's quick on her feet. She has a common touch and doesn't come across as an elitist. She would win a significant amount of blue collar votes. And she would win several of the battleground states and cross the line in terms of the Electoral College.

But black voters may revolt against replacing Harris with a white woman.

Democrats have good options to win against Trump. But I think the likelihood of the Democratic coalition - particularly Blacks and progressives - uniting around a candidate is extremely unlikely. So it's going to be a mess and the odds are extremely high that Trump wins.

Whitmer is another Hillary Clinton.

Both polarizing figures.

No.

Buttigieg
Pro: great speaker and debater. Intelligent, practical, knowledgeable on domestic policies.
Con: white male with no particular support from Black and Hispanic communities.

Whitmer
Pro: woman, experience leading a State
Con: white woman, same as above

I can see a Kamala Harris / Gretchen Whitmer ticket.

The Gavin is too Californian, bless him.

Are you kidding? America is not electing a gay man or a woman, now matter how much I would personally love that.

Honestly, I don't think a gay man would win running as a Democrat. I think it is actually possible for a gay man to win as a Republican though. Republicans don't really care as long as they are part of their team. Religious conservatives overwhelmingly vote for Trump despite the has been divorced and cheated on his multiple times. I think it's more likely that the first gay president and woman president are Republican.

Nonsense. Why is Tim Scott desperately trying to convince us that beard is a genuine relationship at almost 60 years old? Please.

Religious conservatives voted for Trump because they wanted the SCOTUS majority so they could overturn Roe and other rulings. They want him again to see if they can get abortion banned nationwide. They have never cared that he is a rapist with the morals of an alley cat.

I mean, Cory Booker is doing the same thing.

And only the delusional thinks the president would try to wrestle power away from his successor with a small disorganized mob led by a guy carrying a skateboard.
