Potential for Atlanta here tomorrow? What will MCPS do? Have at it... |
YES, there is school tomorrow, on time. No potential for Atlanta--the roads are salted. Everything is salted. |
I predict that MCPS cancels tomorrow. But, I have no real basis of fact for my position. |
It's going to be interesting; it's supposed to start late tonight, but continue. So the issue may be getting the kids back home more than getting them to school.
I predict they cancel too, unless the forecast goes down from 4-6". |
Schools will be CLOSED unless the forecast changes dramatically between now and 5:00 am tomorrow morning. Heaviest snow expected during the morning and the early afternoon. No way they'll open with heavy snow forecast during travel times.
Make the call this evening Dr. Star so we can all enjoy the Super Bowl even more! |
The problem with Atlanta, as highlighted by Capital Weather Gang (quoting someone from NWS, I believe), was that the state/officials read reports of 70% chance of "good" and didn't account for the 30% chance of "bad". Very interesting. If they shut things down for only 30% bad expectation and they're in a reality of the 70%, they get slammed for being idiotic. But instead they went with the "probably won't happen" and it was their Commutageddon.
Tomorrow's forecast seems highly unstable (trace close to DC, several inches in Northern MoCo.) It will be interesting to see what MCPS decides. I hope their decision will be correct. If it isn't, I hope that the public will at least consider what the possible outcomes could have been. And I hope that everyone learns something from the lesson of Atlanta. I do believe that the Fed Govt's decisions the last couple of years have been to avoid another Commutageddon. As much as I don't like the decisions, I'm happy to avoid another 7-hour commute. My personal expectation is that MCPS/Starr will wait until after midnight to make a decision to see if temps drop faster than anticipated. |
Yes, everything is salted now. But will the rain that arrives first wash the salt away? Then what? A couple of or three years ago, all the jurisdictions salted the roads, it rained first and then turned to snow, and then we had an Atlanta. I think every jurisdiction blamed the rain for the massive traffic jams since it washed the salt away. |
It looks like it's not going to drop below freezing so this is going to be rain IMO. |
Surface temperature above freezing but up in the clouds colder producing snow. So in theory it won't stick on roads but still causes driving problems with visibility. I think school will be cancelled. Bethesda and Silver Spring will have no snow and cry foul. MCPS cannot win whatever they chose to do. |
Schools will be closed Monday and Wednesday barring a miracle. |
Why Wednesday? |
Pay attention. |
A miracle has happened! |
I am thankful for that miracle. |
