| I cannot give up bread. But I am interested in buying the healthiest version. I used to buy the pepperidge farm 100 calorie round thins. Well, I looked at the ingredients and wowzers- not good. I am also ashamed I've been packing these for my DS's lunch. So which bread is the best? Should I go to a place like Springmill bakery and buy a loaf? But then I worry about the calories... |
| I pack them for lunch too. No crusts. Natures own seems to be only one w/o artificial sweeteners which we avoid. What was so shameful to you? |

If going for whole wheat, you have to find 100% whole wheat the label or it can be enriched wheat flour and whole wheat.
I like buying organic because they tend to have very few ingredients. I think there is a lot to be said for the sprouted grain breads. |

ezekiel in the freezer section. but it is pricey and only ok-tasting.
if you believe the paleo theories, all bread is "bad."so in that case, just eat whatever you like best that has the least sugar. |
|
They have a zillion additives. Any interest in making it yourself? My friends who do says it's easy (bread machine), but it goes bad in three days.
I've been thinking about it, but not sure I can find the time on a regular basis. |
| Ezekiel |
| +2 Ezekiel. Often doesn't store so great in the fridge or on counter, but keeps well in the freezer and toasts well. |
| Op here. Thanks for the tip regarding Ezekiel. I will check it out. And to the pp who asked why I was ashamed of sending my kid with the 100 cal rounds- well like I said they are so many additives and preservatives... It's a crazy list that just made me feel uncomfortable. |
| Ezekiel! We like the sesame seed the best. |
we have found that Ezekiel doesn't travel well-so not good for sandwiches/lunches. Good in the morning, toasted but stale and unpleasant if sitting in a container. |
| The sprouted breads at trader Joe's are good. Also several types of Ezekiel's there. |
| For normal, not sprouted (whatever the heck that is) or overly crunchy made from dirt and hippy dust, I'd go with natures own. |
| Are there any breads made from non-GMO wheat? |
I'd guess Whole Foods has some labeled as non-GMO. Have you looked there? |

Ezekiel is definitely healthy but this health nut can't handle the taste.
My top choice is Spring Mill's Honey Whole Wheat Bread. Simple, short ingredient list and actually tastes great. http://www.springmillbread.com/ I buy mine at MOMs. When I don't feel like making the trip to MOMs I go to Trader Joe's and buy the 100% Whole Wheat bread (not the whole grain). It has more ingredients but doesn't have hydrogenated oils, HFCS, and has 5g fiber per slice. And it tastes good. |
