We have a 4 and 3 year old. Where would be a good place to take them? Ski Liberty or Seven Springs?
Does anyone recommend a nice cabin rental place for a large group of parents and their kids? Thank you. |
| Whitetail is great and the closest. You don't need to get a hotel (I would not recommend it as it isn't worth expense). It is only an 1.5 hr drive tops from DC. They have a great bunny hill with a magic carpet for the kids. Go during the week and avoid the crowds. |
| If you really want to get away for the weekend consider Wisp, which is about 3 hours away and there are lots of places to stay in the Deep Creek area. Timberline in WV also has slopeside houses. There are some THs at Whitetail now but the drive is so short it is hardly necessary to stay there. Snowshoe is a longer drive but is very nice and better skiing than any of the closer places. |
What is a 'magic carpet'? Is there anything for a 2 yo to do at Whitetail? We're considering going in Jan/Feb. |
| Ski Liberty is just a half-hour further than Whitetail and also has great instructional programs. Because a lot of DC area people stop at White Tail rather than driving just a little bit further to Liberty, Liberty tends to be less crowded, especially on holiday weekends. |
| Ski Liberty is only about 1.5 hours from Arlington...TOPS. For a day trip, it's great. |

A magic carpet is like an escalator without stairs. You just shuffle onto it and lean a bit forward and it takes you up the hill. Most little kids master it quickly.
I don't think i would recommend taking a 2 year old skiing unless you are willing to entertain them the entire time. Or you are complete ski enthusiast as i've seen out west with kids in backpacks or towed by parents. |

Most ski resorts around here also have snow tubing for little kids. The one at Wintergreen is very very tame and perfect for a 2 year old. You can hold on to your child as you go down.
Note that at least at Wintergreen, you have to reserve a slot for tubing well ahead of time. We learned the hard way. You can't just show up like you do for skiing. Wintergreen also has a great spa and you can rent great condos on www.vrbo.com. The condos on the "ridge" are the best, IMO. Have fun. |
| If you're going for more than a day, 7 Springs is about as good as it gets in the East for a family with kids. The skiing is much better than those closer to DC that get less snow. It's bigger and has longer/wider runs and is a resort with many activities beyond skiing - which a 3 and 4 yo can only handle for so long in a given day. |
Plus, they opened up Sidewinder (new trail) which is a super easy trail for beginners and a good place to learn. |
| Has anyone used the 2-4 yo tubing area or the parent and me ski lesson at either Liberty or Whitetail? Reviews? Dp the kids go down on their own at the little tubing area or do you have to pull them? TIA |
| We were at Liberty last weekend. You have to pull kids up the (gentle) slope and the kids go down by themselves in mini-tubes. It was a bit tame for our 3.5-year-old, who really wanted to go on the main slope (but might have been freaked out by it, really), but she still had fun. |
| Has anyone been to Massanutten? |
