I know you all understand better than anyone just how much time, commitment, and money is required to play high school hockey. It is completely unbelievable to me that a dedicated athlete can put so much into a sport and not be recognized for that effort. I think it’s time to change that! I started a petition a while back and if you have not signed it, please go there now and do so. Please tell your friends and family as well. The more people who sign helps us to show how big the sport is to our area. Here is the link:
http://www.change.org/petitions/montgomery-county-public-schools-make-ice-hockey-an-official-varsity-sport Because of my strong feelings that something should be done, I decided to make this goal of mine my MYP Project. Part of my project, which will also help in my overall goal, is to present my case to the Montgomery School Board. I would like to include your thoughts to the Board in a couple of weeks. Our future high school hockey players deserve a Varsity Letter, like every other athlete in our county!! |
An online petition is not worth squat. Politicians and BOE members take notice when a real petition is presented. You know the kind where someone actually has to stand in front of a store or go door to door and then someone actually signs it.
Having said that this petition is poorly worded. It stresses cost, cost, and more cost. That is the last thing that the members want to hear. |
My kids do not play Hockey but I totally agree with OP. This is a great area for Hockey and we should make a varsity sport. I fully support, good luck, make it happens! |
Unless the cost of hockey takes away the music and arts teacher from your school. They you would cry bloody murder. |
been trying for 25 years to get rugby in the schools but still ac lub team good luck yu are fighting a lsong battle besdies much like soccer and baseball the cooleges don't pay attention to the high school teams it is the clubs they recruit from. |
I think most sports are going to head to the club level eventually. If you look at soccer, for example, all of the high level action has been at the club level (and now academies) for the past 20 years.
I love hockey, played in high school and college, but it shouldn't be a varsity sport here. Sorry. |
The cost is too high for most public school families and the schools. Gear, transportation, locations to practice. Plus insurance would go thru the roof.
In this area it just isn't popular enough. But I personally love it. Much better than soccer which is a total snooze fest. But it is dirt cheap |
Mark my words: Rugby 7s are going to be hugely popular after the 2016 Olympics. |
That would be awesome. My husband is (well was) a rugby player. He had me at rubgy, lol. |
I support it but why are there no girls in the video? |
I am the pp who posted about rugby up above but i msut say hardly. Look how soccer has failed here time after time after time. 90% of the poeple hav eno idea what rugby is and you think 7s is goinmg to take off? sorry I will mark yoru words with a big red X not going tohappen |
With all due respect neither hockey or rugby has any chance of being put into the MCPS budget. The trend the last several years has been to cut athletics. JV sports practices and games have all been cut. Some varsity sports have lost contests. Coaching salaries have all be cut in at least two different ways. These aren't complaints, just facts.
The idea that an expensive varsity sport such as hockey or a very niche sport such as rugby has any chance of being added to the MCPS budget ignores the political reality. If MCPS was to add to the athletics budget, the first two items on the list are most certainly the restoration of cuts or athletic trainers to all high schools. |
FACT: Sports/coaches and Music/Arts budgets are all cut to increase funding for ESOL and FARMS. So all of you for illegal aliens having the same rights as us, have to be understanding that this will continue to happen to Maryland public schools.
In 5yrs there will be no middle school or JV sports in MCPS, let alone new sports like hockey, rugby, gymnastics etc.., |
That is the last thing that the members want to hear. Wow! Did you actually read what was written? The petition CLEARLY stresses recognition. These athletes play for their school teams. Unlike the Golf team, the Swim team, and the Football teams, etc., they get no recognition for representing their schools. |
Wow! Did you actually read what was written? The petition CLEARLY stresses recognition. These athletes play for their school teams. Unlike the Golf team, the Swim team, and the Football teams, etc., they get no recognition for representing their schools. The are allowed to call their teams "Churchill, Wootton, Quince Orchard, etc. Back in the day when lacrosse was a club sport they couldn't even do that. What recognition does the school give a football team besides a banquet at the end of the year? |
