| Hi OP, the Gros Michel were mostly wiped out in the 1960/1970's due to a fungal blight problem. You can sometimes find them in asia because the Thai and Singapore plantations were not affected by that blight. I don't think I've seen them in the U.S. for about 30 years, which is a shame... |

I read something that said almost all the commercial bananas in the world now are Cavendish, and that a blight is making its way through the banana-producing world attacking them too. The perils of monoculture. When those are wiped out, we're going to have to find the next new banana to eat.
