HELP - foot pain

Anonymous
Whenever I workout - run or even lower impact exercise - my feet start hurting. It starts kind of at the outside of the feet (opposite from the arch). But pretty soon it's my whole foot. They feel extremely tired, if that makes sense. And even though my body can do more exercise, my feet can't. Is this an arch problem, meaning I need more arch support? Does anyone else ever get this?

Is this new, ie, did this start happening recently? Maybe you need new shoes.

When you run, do your feet pronate, supinate or stay neutral? Google how to do the wet feet test to try to determine which one you are so you have the right type of shoe for your feet.

It's newish. It happened after I had my kids. My feet hurt towards latter part of each pregnancy, probably from weight gain. But it's like my feet didn't quite recover. It happens in old and new shoes.

Sounds like you need to find the right type of shoe and maybe the right size. Your feet may have hurt when you were pregnant not only because of the extra weight but maybe due to your feet swelling. Go to a running store and have them evaluate your gait so they can recommend a proper fitting shoe.

Maybe you're right. It happens whether I buy my size, a 1/2 size up or even a whole size up. It really sucks because it stops me from going on with my workout even though I'm far from my cardio limit.

Could be that you need a wider shoe, not just a size up.

Have you been fitted at a running store for proper shoes, based on your arch, etc.?

How old are your shoes?

Have you considered going to a podiatrist?

Does it happen at certain times of the day (i.e., first step of the day vs. during exercise)?

I have had plantar fasciitis, but that's different from the type of pain you described. Honestly, I'd see a podiatrist if I were you.

It doesn't happen unless I'm doing some kind of moderate to high impact exercise. My shoes are less than a week old - just got them! I also wear a different pair depending on what I'm doing - also new. I was fitted for those at that running store in Tysons and I keep buying those over and over.

Well your feet change and so do the models of shoes. I get fitted every 18 months or so and buy new shoes every 3-4 months. Go get fitted.

My guess would be that your arches have fallen and that you need arch supports. I use the rigid ones from Spenco. Also, if you have flat feet it's a lot of wear and tear to go barefoot. Do you do this? Do your feet hurt if you are on them for a long time outside of exercise? You might want to look into slippers from Orthaheel. At home I cannot go barefoot at all because it impacts my workout too much.
