Cat coughing

Anonymous
My cat started developing this occasional (and then daily) cough a couple months ago. The kind where she's crouched down low, neck stuck out, she lets out this coughing/hacking sound for about 10 seconds and stops. Sometimes it sounds like she's coughing up phloem and re-swallowing it. Anyway, at first I thought it was a hairball and gave her hairball meds, but when it didn't get better took her to the vet. The vet diagnosed her with a tracheal infection and put her on antibiotics. The antibiotics seemed to help, or at least I didn't hear her cough for a while, but now two weeks after finishing the round of treatment she's at it again. Ack! Planning to call the vet again but wondering if there's certain things I should be asking them to test? The vet listened to her lungs last time and said they were clear (apparently ruling out feline asthma). Anyone have a similar experience?

Our cat had similar issues and like yours, improved on the antibiotic but then relapsed after finishing the course. We think that the antibiotic knocked the infection down but was not given long enough. Had the vet prescribe a second (different) antibiotic and cat finally cleared the infection. May be worth a try.

Chest rads are in order. May also just be a hairball.

Could be her litter, because they lick it off their fur. Try unscented and something low-dust, like Exquisicat. We all have asthma and this is the best for our entire household, cats and humans. Works great, too. It's pricey but lasts a long time.
