| I was diagnosed with a missed miscarriage/blighted ovum at ~8 weeks last Monday. Doctor strongly preferred misoprostol/cytotec to a d&c, and we agreed, so I took it Monday night, and it seems to have run the expected course: cramping, bleeding, bleeding much heavier at times, severe cramping coupled with large clots, then tapering off after about 8 hours. I've been bleeding fairly steadily ever since, and while it's been much lighter in terms of flow-on-a-pad the past few days, I'm still getting lots of bright red blood (with small mucusy clots) when wiping. I have a u/s to check for retained POC on Monday. Is this ever going to stop? Is this normal? Hcg levels are declining; 22K last Tuesday afternoon (after I thought I had passed most everything) and 1100 this Wednesday. |
| I had a D&C, but I still bled for about 5 weeks after the procedure. There's just a lot of lining that needs to clear out. My bleeding was on the long side of normal. Obviously check with your RE, but I'm guessing it's normal in your case. |
| Its normal but check with your doctor to be sure. |
| OP here...file this under "glad I asked" -- my doctor wasn't going to do a follow up u/s for retained POC, but I asked, and, of course, there were retained products and significant vascular flow to them. She was willing to give another dose of cytotec a day or two to work, but I'm scheduled for a D&C on Thursday. UGH. |
Sorry hun. The D&C isn't bad at all. It was my first time going under anesthesia and was anxious about that but it was easy recovery and I was glad to have the nightmare over quicker than the medical or natural route. Good luck. |

I'm sorry for your loss, OP. I hope the second cytotec works.
I came into this late but I was going to say, see the doc. For anyone else who wonders, I had 2 mmc with cytotec and bleeding didn't last nearly so long, more like a very heavy period (after the actual m/c part). |
