refinishing a built in cabinet

We purchased a 1970s condo with an original condition built in cabinet in the living room (previous/first owner told us that he paid 5% of the condos value at the time to have it built--crazy!). The color and the decorative molding do not go along with our decor so we were thinking of refinishing it. It is has held up well and has cherry vaneer over what looks to be plywood.

All we are looking to do is stain it darker and remove the molding.

Has anyone refinished vaneer?

Does anyone have any recommendations for area woodworkers who have done this kind of work?
