ok, fine, but why do private preschools need to follow suit and close too?

What's the deal with private preschools closing when public schools are closing? There's no bus and if parents think it's too dangerous they could keep the kid home. I don't get it.

Are you stupid? If its too dangerous for public school kids to travel, why would it be safe for anyone else?

How many threads are we going to see on this very topic???

I went to private school and took public school buses. we took one bus to the local public HS and then another from there to my school.

No one wants a lawsuit, you psycho! Take your kids to work with you if you have no other childcare option.

This is a question for your private school. No one forces them to follow the public school guidelines.

They often do this to accommodate their teachers who have children in public schools and would not be able to work because their kids are off.

Interesting. I hadn't considered this.

DS's preschool typically follows FFX County, but we wère notified yesterday that they'd be open today regardless of what the county did. A little while later FFX announced that they'd be closed.

Because it's dangerous for the TEACHERS AND STAFF to be on the road. You sound pretty selfish and entitled OP.

They do it because then they don't have to think or make decisions on their own.

If it matters to you, ask when you are touring and before you sign up.

We found a preschool that followed the federal government. It made a huge difference.

Do you think all the teachers sleep in bunkers above their classrooms, OP?

Because the public schools have administration set up to determine whether it is appropriate to close. Most private schools don't have that, so they rely on the better-positioned public schools to make the call. Plus, it simplifies closure announcements--the radio/television stations announce the public school system closures. I went to parochial school, and we always followed the local public school system for weather-related closures.

This. (Director of our preschool told us this was the reason)

I agree with OP. It's no more dangerous for teachers to be on the road than everybody else who has to go to work. Everyone else goes, in every other city, except federal workers in DC. The public schools close because of busing, which does not apply to private preschools or daycares (if it does, they can close on an individual basis). Or, if teachers, and federal workers, are getting a free day off, we all should. And McDonald's, Gymboree, gas stations, 7-11, will all be closed, too. But why does daycare close so those low-paid teachers don't have to pay for backup childcare, which forces other working-class parents ( health workers, retail, non-federal secretaries) to pay for backup care, or take a vacation day or unpaid day off? Not everyone who uses daycare is taking it in.

Certainly in other cities, health workers and emergency workers work in bad weather conditions, but other businesses do close for weather, even in other cities. Actually, I think it makes everything easier in DC to have a large central employer that others can follow, rather than most businesses having to make their own decisions.

McDonald's, Gymboree, etc. do all close if the roads are too bad to get there. And it seems that in some parts of the 400 miles that make up Fairfax County, some roads are still to bad to get there. The county needs to break up, or at least the school district. It's just too big.
