Which school is best?

I'm selling my house this spring. The crime is increasing amongst other things. I have an opportunity here to move anywhere for DC who will be entering Kindergarten. Forget where I work for a moment and share where you think we should move. I have about $150,000 in equity in the current house but certainly can't afford over $450,000 for the new place, prefer less--condo fine. Or I could rent. The school I would want would ideally have lots of outdoor time and a strong arts program but we are talking DCPS. Other than that, great test scores and diversity are a must. Thoughts?

Baillou and Dunbar are great options, with their new hundred-million dollar buildings.

DC is entering Kindergarten

Are you committed to staying in DC? I think that you're more likely to find what you want in the close in suburbs.

You are only considering DCPS? What about charters?

What size house/condo do you need?

Well, no, I guess I don't have to stay in DC but it *may* be closer to my new job. I am considering charters but since they are lottery I can't plan for those. I can move into the DCPS neighborhood of my choice though.

I would like 3 bedrooms but definitely two.

At only $450K, you're not going to be able to buy in many of the neighborhoods with stronger schools. Your best bet may be to rent in the Murch or Brent districts.

At 450 you can't even buy more than a smallish row house in Brookland. You will have to do a ton of searching my sister was able to find one in kensiington only because she is on a really busy road.

this is my current plan

Best schools are subjective, so I would ask what are the worst schools as they can be validated.

You can buy a great condo in Glover Park for $450k and send DC to Stoddert Elementary.

You can rent in either the Murch or Lafayette school districts as well as Eaton as well as Janney. Lots of families do. You can also buy condos in many of these neighborhoods in your budget.

If I were buying for your budget and interests, this is what I would do. You are taking a bit if a gamble on MS but that is 6 years away and I personally think Hardy will reach the tipping point soon with IB kids and there are many IB families now that are happy there. It is a great and safe neighborhood and families I respect are very happy with Stoddert.
